Dr. Arman Sargolzaei, Florida Polytechnic University: Testing and Verification of Autonomous Vehicles

Rapid growth in the development and application of autonomous systems (AVs) and their utilization as critical infrastructures, such as transportation systems, mandates testing, and verification of such systems. However, we currently lack a reliable solution for testing and verification of AVs. The automotive industry was testing the actuation of vehicles for many years.
The addition of the perception and decision making involved with AVs has added an order-of-magnitude level of complexity to solving the safety and security problems and leading to some critical open issues. Critical issues include finding and testing complex functional scenarios; verifying that sensors, object recognition systems, decision-making units, and control systems accurately operate under weather conditions, faults, failures, and cyber-attacks. It's also a big challenge to verify the AV's language of driving and building a regulatory regime that enables accumulative learning.
We observe that today, none of the above questions are solved for AVs. The current commercial solutions are using ad-hoc methods such as miles driven to provide some indication of safety, but no fundamental structure has been offered to demonstrate the robustness and safety of AV products. Further, without addressing these issues, regulators do not have the means to address safety issues or even to communicate safety issues to operators or the public. The Advance Mobility Institute (AMI)' verification framework is trying to improve AV's safety, security, and reliability through its unique structure. The presentation discusses the AMI's effort and different research thrusts focusing on testing and verification of AVs.

Biography:
Dr. Arman Sargolzaei is currently an assistant professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Florida Polytechnic University and is an affiliated faculty with the Advanced Mobility Institute (AMI). His expertise is in applying linear and nonlinear control methods, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to increase the safety and security of networked control systems (NCSs). His mission is to enhance the quality of life for people, with assuring safety and security privacy concerns through extensive collaboration among multi-disciplinary fields. His research on the security of NCSs combined with the knowledge of control theory, system identification, mathematics, and statistics carried significant practical implications in better understanding the pathways of faults, failure, and attack detection and compensation for NCSs. He followed his vision in securing NCSs by leading several funded projects. He is recognized with the honor of the "Faculty Research Excellence Award" for two consecutive years.
He believes in the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration as the key to success and continually collaborates with industries and universities. Dr. Sargolzaei's peer-reviewed research on the theory and applications of NCSs in unmanned aerial and ground vehicles, and smart grids has been published in more than 70 articles. He has presented extensively in international and national conferences and workshops, chaired industrial and research workshops and training events, received research awards, grants and reviewed top-quality journal papers. He also serves as the editorial board of the International Journal of Instrumentation and Control Systems, and the International Journal of Machine Learning and Applications. He is largely involved in national and international fund-raising events for improving the educational and training on cybersecurity engineering. He is a proud splash instructor volunteer and actively participates in outreach events.
