Presented to: Mr. James T. Doherty
Citation: In grateful recognition of his leadership and achievements on behalf of the Institute of Navigation.
James T. Doherty served as The Institute of Navigation’s president from June 2005 to January 2007. Prior to his term as president, he served on the Executive Committee and the ION Council holding numerous positions, including executive vice president, eastern region vice president, eastern region member-at-large, and Washington, D.C. section chair. Furthermore, Doherty has served as the program chair of the 1999 ION National Technical Meeting and as the general chair of the 2000 ION National Technical Meeting.
During his term as ION president, Doherty was instrumental in partnering with the IEEE for the IEEE/ION PLANS 2006 meeting. He expanded the programs at the ION’s smaller national meetings by broadening the coverage of navigation topics and workshops, and he provided guidance for broadening the ION’s outreach activities to include partnering with the Smithsonian on its planned exhibit, “Navigation Through Time: From Chronometers to GPS,” and on the ION’s virtual navigation museum.
This award was presented in January 2007 at the ION’s National Technical Meeting when the newly elected officers took office.
